CBM is an international aid organisation that works with over a 1000 project partners in 109 countries. CBM SARO (S) supports 144 partner NGOs working with hearing and visually impaired persons, to provide community-based rehabilitation in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra; and also in Sri Lanka. Its primary work is in providing funding, support, and medical care to prevent and cure blindness; and the rehabilitation and training of persons with disability, to integrate them into society. It supports eye hospitals and clinics that provide treatment, medical, and surgical facilities to preserve or restore eyesight, including early detection and childhood intervention programmes for visually impaired children. It also provides training for children and adults with visual and hearing impairment; including schooling, training in sign language, and support to vocational training centres. It is officially recognised as a professional organisation for the prevention of blindness by the WHO. It also provides care for persons with mental retardation and physical disability, including medical care, orthopaedic aids, schooling and vocational training. It supports special education and resource consultants to introduce integrated education programmes.
