PACT is a childcare helpline set up by the Bangalore Children's Hospital (BCH)* to assist parents with medical treatment, especially at night. It has set aside the services of qualified paediatricians who respond to calls between 8pm and 8am. Once the details of the problem are made available, the paediatrician makes a diagnosis and offers suggestions depending on the seriousness of the problem. For instance, in emergencies such as accidents or food poisoning, a course of first aid will be suggested; in more serious cases, hospitalisation or a visit to a doctor may also be recommended. If parents decide to take their child to the BCH, an ambulance is arranged. Anxious parents can call the helpline as often as they need to and all calls are answered without hesitation. Parents wishing to avail of the services of PACT can register their child for a nominal annual membership of Rs 250 and a one-time admission fee of Rs. 50. This enables them to avail of the helpline's facilities any number of times for a period of 12 months.
