children of leprosy afflicted persons, 2 ½-5

Details of Work

SWAPLAP began its work towards the rehabilitation of leprosy patients in Chetput, Tamil Nadu, and later opened in Bangalore. Today, apart from rehabilitation, it is also involved in creating awareness about leprosy as well as TB and AIDS. In both places, SWAPLAP runs a free child-care centre for children from 2 ½ to 5 years. The 22 children enrolled in Bangalore are children of leprosy patients who live in a predominantly leprosy-afflicted colony. The centre provides education, mid-day meals, play equipment and uniforms. There are plans to start after-school tuitions for the older children of the colony. SWAPLAP creates awareness about leprosy, TB and AIDS through publications, exhibitions and poster competitions for teachers, social workers and college students.
