NIMHANS is a central government, post-graduate teaching hospital deemed university, that offers post-graduate training in psychiatry, clinical psychology, psychiatric social work and psychiatric nursing. It is one of the few centres in the country that offers comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services for psychiatric, neurological and neurosurgical problems in adults and children. Its inpatient ward has facilities for accomodating a child and either one or both parents. It also functions as a resource centre for training in the behavioural sciences in the SAARC and South East Asian regions. It offers comprehensive evaluation for children with developmental, emotional, behavioural, and academic problems, and psychotic disorders. It uses a multidisciplinary approach to evaluation and treatment involving both medical treatment and counselling therapy. It is one of the few centres that has therapy for children, including play, behavioural and family therapy. It has several support departments including speech, occupational and physiotherapy units. It is active in the area of family work such as education and counselling. It has a School Mental Health Programme which offers training in life skills for NGOs and schools. It also offers a three-month certificate course in Child Psychiatry, and post-graduate Masters', M Phil and PhD programmes in all faculties.
