Details of Work

MAYA is involved with working children who have never attended school or are school drop-outs. It runs a one-year non-formal education programme to help children enrol in school, and a supplementary education and open school programme to help them stay in school. It runs creches and play school facilities for pre-school children, and helps them enter school. It provides vocational training for youth in screen printing, carpentry, and two-wheeler maintenance. It is involved in a project, Pre-vocational School, which aims to provide educational opportunities for street children and a practical education curriculum for all children. It works with parents, teachers and government officials to ensure children remain in school and receive quality education. It lobbies to influence policy regarding children, and networks with voluntary agencies, trade unions and individuals. It was the state coordinator for the Campaign Against Child Labour, Karnataka* and continues to be a member. It is the coordinator for the Citizens Initiative on Elementary Education Karnataka*.
