rural children and adults with disability
ADD India works with adults and children with disability in rural Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. It helps enrol children in nearby formal schools, or the most easily accessible special schools. It works in collaboration with organisations working in the areas of mental retardation, speech, hearing, visual, and physical disability, to provide diagnosis, assessment and treatment. It bears part of the cost of the disability aids the child may require, while the parents pay as much as they can afford. It helps create self-help and informal support groups where members can discuss their problems and share information. It provides assistance in how to avail of government schemes for the disabled. It also provides training and technical support to organisations working in other areas such as women, education, and community development. For these partner NGOs, it helps create awareness about the inclusion of persons with disability as beneficiaries of their programmes, assists in identifying persons with disability, and offers information about options for treatment and rehabilitation.
