Samarthanam trust works primarily with the visually challenged. It runs three free hostels serving 90 children: for visually challenged girls above 15 years ; for visually challenged boys above 15 years and; economically challenged girls above 12 years. The Trust assists the visually impaired students get admission in college and complete their graduation. Along with the US-based Child Vikas International, it has adopted a government school in Hulimavu, providing mid-day meals and two teachers to help with supplementary education for classes 6 and 7. Under the Integrated Education for the Disabled Scheme (IED), it provides eight resource teachers to work in 52 government schools covering 225 disabled children. It also runs a computer cell which gives free training to disabled children in class 8 and above. Under the State s Akshara Dasoha Programme, the trust has undertaken to provide mid-day meals in 22 schools reaching out to about 5000 children.
