DSERT implements and monitors innovative projects initiated by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT), National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA), UNICEF, and the World Bank. It is responsible for several academic units. The State Institute of Education undertakes all activities relating to pre-service and in-service training of primary school teachers. The State Institute of Science ensures a qualitative improvement in the teaching of science and mathematics at the primary and secondary school levels. It promotes science-related seminars and exhibitions, teacher training, science clubs in schools, production of audio and video cassettes and supply of science equipment; and it collaborates with other organisations for science education programme. The State Educational Evaluation Unit is responsible for improving evaluation techniques at the primary and secondary school levels. The Educational Technology Cell provides training in the use of educational technology, prepares audio and video materials, and undertakes research in the use of these technologies. It collaborates with the NCTE* for administrative and academic programmes and organises competitions to promote children's literature. The Text Book Unit develops and produces nationalised textbooks from Std 1 to 10, and distributes free textbooks through the DPI*. It prepares textbooks for Std 1 to 3 based on the Minimum Levels of Learning (MLL) for DPEP* and non-DPEP districts, and reviews the existing syllabus. The DSERT also monitors the scheme to provide Integrated Education for disabled children which is being implemented through 23 voluntary agencies, provides training in integrated education, and conducts workshops on the preparation of teaching aids. Under the Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) programme of the central government, it trains anganwadi and pre-primary teachers and DIET* officers, undertakes survey projects, conducts workshops on curriculum development, and prepares ECCE training manuals. The DSERT also support DIET* and the colleges of teacher education, in teacher training.
