Aim To work with the community of the urban poor, working children and the government to establish appropriate social paradigms to prevent children from working; and to provide protection, nutrition, legal aid and sustainable alternatives to children already in exploitative situations.

Details of Work

APSA runs Nammamane a home, residential training and child labour advocacy centre for 200 working children. It runs Hosamane, a transit home, that also has a drug de-sensitisation programme. It has centres in four slums which offer children a safe place to work out their problems. It runs education centres to help children stay in school and avoid becoming child labourers. It is involved with a toll free helpline for children in distress. Makkala Sahaya Vani*, in conjunction with the Police Commissioner and other voluntary agencies; and provides protection, nutrition, and legal aid to children referred through the helpline. It organises Hasiru Sangha, a child labourers collective with members from 11 slums. It has a cultural group, Inchara, involved with theatre, puppetry, radio and creative activities. It has a branch in Hyderabad.
